India: Real Streets

I can’t stop picking my nose. I try to keep my finger out of there, but if I leave it alone for three minutes it just fills up with the city’s residue all over again. I’ve been in massive developing cities before: Lima, Mexico City, Shenzhen, Hanoi…but this? This is crazy. This is New Delhi.

Five Months of Memories

CATEGORIES 1 Comment

In the digital age, it’s easier than ever to relive the past. A simple swipe through your iPhone’s photo album will replace whatever dusty memory may (or may not) exist in your mind, providing mega pixels to reinforce the fact that, Yes, that did actually happen. With winter meeting a lackluster conclusion in Eastern Canada this past week (as anyone working in “the industry” will attest, this was one of our worst seasons in recent history), my pocket-sized memory reinforcer provided evidence that my 2011/12 snowboard experience wasn’t entirely bad. Honest. And here are a few of the photos to prove it.

Cheap Film, Expensive Camera

CATEGORIES Leave a comment

I’ve been on the road since October of 2011, only to come back recently from Barcelona Spain where I spent a month with a group of guys from the DC Canada Skate team shooting an article for SBC Skateboard magazine.

While on this long stint away from home I spent lots of time shooting with 35mm film on a couple different cameras, documenting the people I was with and places I’ve travelled to. Las Vegas, Toronto, Niagara, Canton OH, Los Angeles and Barcelona where some of the places I called home during this long stint. I didn’t always having the luxury of a Pro Camera Shop close-by to buy the type of film that I’m used to shooting. Even though this can really be a drag, I wasn’t going to let it to stop me from shooting film. Instead I started buying “consumer” marketed film at stores like Souvenir shops, Walgreens, Walmart, Target and pretty much anywhere that had 35mm film available.  Read more

New Zealand

For a few weeks every August (since I was 19) I’ve been making a trip down to the Southern Hemisphere. After finishing up filming in May/June and spending two months in the office on the computer editing, I’m always super excited to get back on the snow, ride powder for a few weeks, and get a head start on filming for the coming Winter. Radical Sabbatical

CATEGORIES Leave a comment

A few months ago I hit the road. To borrow a phrase from someone who I forget right now, a radical sabbatical.

My wife and I loaded up our Hybrid Civic and headed west, south and everywhere in between. Visiting family, friends, making videos, getting lost, finding Trader Joes on Yelp—you know, taking it all in. And to stay true to my Clark Griswold-esque vacation style, between worrying about getting to the next continental breakfast on time I managed to take a few photos. Here are some dispatches from the road. Doing What I Do

Doing what I do, regretfully I need to be careful about the things I say because, well… publishing ain’t what it used to be and unfortunately magazines aren’t the invincible, insuperable powers theyonce were. So in the spirit of ‘treading lightly’, let me distinguish for the readers of this Time Capsule, that Shake Junt is (was) a phenomenon that is (was) happening (in the early 10s) sweeping a generation of skateboarders with fun antics and positive messages of drinking 40s, smoking weed, eating fried chicken—and celebrating it with a good ol’ fashioned booty shaking contest. It’s the type of brand any fourteen year-old would make if given the opportunity; Tacky, over the top, rude, and totally awesome.

Africa – A Conversation

“Shot, bru. Thanks for picking me up. Ughh… I’m so tired. I can’t even remember you dropping me off at work this morning.”

“Yeah, man. I barely remember driving you to the hospital. I went and surfed after and was a complete wreck. I don’t want to go out at night with you anymore [laughs].”

“Well, I had to go work in the O.R. as soon as I arrived at the hospital. I had my friend inject me with a shot of adrenalin first for a wake up call [laughs].”

“What! You guys do that to each other?”

“[Laughs] We have access to all the drugs. And this is Africa, man. There are no rules here.” Read more

Weekend At Jimmer’s (And The Krebs Poster)

Most winter weekends, when not traveling elsewhere to ride, I can be found at Blue Mountain. As far as I’m concerned, Blue offers the best all-around shred experience by Southern Ontario standards. As much as I like riding the parks (and riding with the friends who ride said parks) at Horseshoe Valley and Mount St. Louis — or indulging in the occasional mid-week night session at Lakeridge or Dagmar — the longer vertical and varied terrain at Blue offers the closest comparison to “freeriding” in the area. And yes, the quotes around “freeriding” indicate my healthy awareness of the irony and absurdity of the usage of this word in a paragraph about Ontario snowboarding. Read more

There’s More to Bralorne Than Chicken Wings And Beer

I had always wanted to visit this place.  I had looked on maps before and saw how close it was and wondered why I had never been yet.  I had friends tell me of big mountains, and light powder. And then I was told that you could drive your snowmobile in the streets all around town and then park right front of the pub.  I was sold, I’m going to Bralorne! Read more

Shit I Learned From My Dad

Since day one I’ve looked up to one man more than all the rest combined. He flew airplanes, big fucking airplanes. Much like the lighter than air machinery he operated he has always been larger than life and functions in the same capacity. Retired and supposedly resting on his laurels reaping the rewards of his 33 year career with Air Canada I still get updates from his ‘Spot’ GPS on a weekly basis that put him in the middle of the Atlantic, Denmark, Scotland, China, South America and any number of the supposed 4 corners of the globe.
