Doing what I do, regretfully I need to be careful about the things I say because, well… publishing ain’t what it used to be and unfortunately magazines aren’t the invincible, insuperable powers theyonce were. So in the spirit of ‘treading lightly’, let me distinguish for the readers of this Time Capsule, that Shake Junt is (was) a phenomenon that is (was) happening (in the early 10s) sweeping a generation of skateboarders with fun antics and positive messages of drinking 40s, smoking weed, eating fried chicken—and celebrating it with a good ol’ fashioned booty shaking contest. It’s the type of brand any fourteen year-old would make if given the opportunity; Tacky, over the top, rude, and totally awesome.

“Shot, bru. Thanks for picking me up. Ughh… I’m so tired. I can’t even remember you dropping me off at work this morning.”
“Yeah, man. I barely remember driving you to the hospital. I went and surfed after and was a complete wreck. I don’t want to go out at night with you anymore [laughs].”
“Well, I had to go work in the O.R. as soon as I arrived at the hospital. I had my friend inject me with a shot of adrenalin first for a wake up call [laughs].”
“What! You guys do that to each other?”
“[Laughs] We have access to all the drugs. And this is Africa, man. There are no rules here.” Read more

Most winter weekends, when not traveling elsewhere to ride, I can be found at Blue Mountain. As far as I’m concerned, Blue offers the best all-around shred experience by Southern Ontario standards. As much as I like riding the parks (and riding with the friends who ride said parks) at Horseshoe Valley and Mount St. Louis — or indulging in the occasional mid-week night session at Lakeridge or Dagmar — the longer vertical and varied terrain at Blue offers the closest comparison to “freeriding” in the area. And yes, the quotes around “freeriding” indicate my healthy awareness of the irony and absurdity of the usage of this word in a paragraph about Ontario snowboarding. Read more

I had always wanted to visit this place. I had looked on maps before and saw how close it was and wondered why I had never been yet. I had friends tell me of big mountains, and light powder. And then I was told that you could drive your snowmobile in the streets all around town and then park right front of the pub. I was sold, I’m going to Bralorne! Read more

Since day one I’ve looked up to one man more than all the rest combined. He flew airplanes, big fucking airplanes. Much like the lighter than air machinery he operated he has always been larger than life and functions in the same capacity. Retired and supposedly resting on his laurels reaping the rewards of his 33 year career with Air Canada I still get updates from his ‘Spot’ GPS on a weekly basis that put him in the middle of the Atlantic, Denmark, Scotland, China, South America and any number of the supposed 4 corners of the globe.

It has come and it’s here to stay (for a while at least). The dreaded winter weather of our beloved country has arrived. Sure, it’s great news for all the snowboarders, but shitty news for all skateboarders for whom the rain and snow will keep indoors. This is the time our minds begin to process ideas at full speed when thinking of where to travel and chase a combination of the sun, the warmer weather, and the endless skate spots.

I know a lot of people who traveled to Australia as soon as they’ve finished high school. At 18 or 19-years old, it’s a safe and culturally familiar destination for a first time traveler. I get it. When I was that age, Australia was the last place on my mind. I’d spent enough time in Whistler to think that all Aussies were obnoxious and all I cared about were mountains. I didn’t give a shit about the beach. I grew up on the beach and it was overrated. As time passed, I heard so many stories about people going Down Under to drink box wine in Byron Bay and get laid in cheap Brisbane hostels that I felt like I’d already been to Australia, even though I was subconsciously making an effort to not go there. I had officially convinced myself that I should stay out of Australia for good.

With a dire early season forecast back east, booking a flight to ride Whistler the first weekend of December made perfect sense; especially factoring in the free accommodation thanks to my wife’s work trip to the Whistler Film Festival. And with social media practically vomiting the powder onto my Toronto desk, I felt no reluctance clicking the “purchase” button. I might’ve missed the 60 cm days and accompanying face shots everyone was bragging about on Facebook, but my mantra was simple: Who cares? I sure as shit wouldn’t be snowboarding had I stayed at home, and groomers and park laps on Whistler and Blackcomb under sunny skies never disappoints.

A “Working Vacation”, I’m sure we’ve all heard the term before. Without hesitation, I’m also pretty sure that everyone reading this post could identify someone in his or her network that needs a vacation from their regular 9-5 grind. If done properly, taking time off can actually be quite beneficial to your relationships, your creativity, and most importantly, yourself………………….

Leonard Knight is one of my greatest inspirations. I feel honored to have spent the time I have with him, and always look forward to spending more in the future. If you don’t know who Leonard Knight is here is the back-story of “The Man Behind the Mountain”.
