It’s Not All About Rails And Stairs. Skateboarding has become so insane these days. Nyjah’s part? I mean people are just going crazy to kill themselves. Don’t get me wrong it’s amazing. I would never have imagined it would get this heavy. Hollywood 16 is pretty much a skatepark rail to these kids now! It’s amazing but it’s just not my thing.

Doing what I do, regretfully I need to be careful about the things I say because, well… publishing ain’t what it used to be and unfortunately magazines aren’t the invincible, insuperable powers theyonce were. So in the spirit of ‘treading lightly’, let me distinguish for the readers of this Time Capsule, that Shake Junt is (was) a phenomenon that is (was) happening (in the early 10s) sweeping a generation of skateboarders with fun antics and positive messages of drinking 40s, smoking weed, eating fried chicken—and celebrating it with a good ol’ fashioned booty shaking contest. It’s the type of brand any fourteen year-old would make if given the opportunity; Tacky, over the top, rude, and totally awesome.

It is sad to report that the world is less one epic EPIC dude. The first time I met Jamer was at the Vic West skatepark. It was the early 90′s and skateboarding was at it’s most critical phase. There he was with a wacky hairdo and bizarre kit, riding a shitty old rattly department store board (the kind that doesn’t really turn) with all the plastic, and was blasting massive stylish frontside ollies over the tight pyramid all the while nonsensically shouting over and over, “In like Flynn. Never out… No doubt!”.

Skateboarding takes me to a lot of different locations, not just geographically divided but also socially “class” divided. As skateboarders we don’t judge the location we skate in, we just judge the quality of the spot. If the spots sucks we don’t bother with it. If it’s good, whether it’s in a High Class Suburban neighborhood of Vancouver or a gang infested hood of Los Angeles or San Diego, we will skate it. Its that simple. Read more

The last month or so I’ve been skating a bunch with Zero’s Tom Karangelov. Tom grew up in Huntington Beach and somehow came out of there being an awesome kid. Tom introduced me to his concept of “Riding the Wave.” Riding the Wave is Tom’s way of describing how or why someone skates. People that are out there just trying to land tricks for coverage and fame are not Riding the Wave. Tom says Riding the Wave is going out skating just to go out and have fun, cruise and hang with your bros.

Last summer I got to show around the RDS dudes on their World’s Deadliest Tour (for the record, no lives were lost during the tour) when they came through Toronto. While they were here I pulled Courtenay, B.C.’s Sascha Daley aside to film another installment of SBC’s “3 Minutes With…” series.

Waiting and anticipating is a thing of the past these days, and people’s patience grows shorter and shorter by the minute. This can be a good thing with the growth of the internet when organizing a certain event. Trying to organize a country to have a video contest would have been very difficult a few years ago, especially when it comes to the mass population viewing the winning entries.

I thought it was most fitting for this time of year to post a few rain skate shots as my first bneeth post. The summer of 2011 has come to an end and with fall and winter conditions coming on stong put’s most of the skateboarders in Canada into a dark and dull place.

Making magazines isn’t easy. Deadlines generally get blown instead of the editors themselves, and more often than not it’s a thankless, underpaid profession. You don’t make money in media. Well, skate/snow media anyways. You do it because you love it, or because no other profession would have you.

Over the last year we (Don’t Sleep Productions) have been jokingly throwing around the idea of shooting a short Zombie film for the Whistler Heavy Hitting B Grade Horror Film Festival. I wanted to shoot it all at the Whistler skatepark and do a sort of Zombie vs. Skateboarders type thing.
