I’ve been playing guitar, mostly electric, since I was 11 years old. Every once in a while, I look for something new to try. It turns out that the very day that I looked at 3 string blues sticks at L&M would be the day I would hear about Cigar Box Guitars and Craig Williams. I knew I didn’t buy the blues stick for a reason! Craig was that reason! I ordered a box right way which turned into a budding musical friendship and inspired the following interview. After my last post about finding the value of snowboarding’s legends I wanted to get in touch with some of the riders who have reemerged in the spotlight to see why they’ve stuck around and why their experience is important to the future of the sport. By chance I ended up spending two weeks with Mike Basich in Japan this February. It was my first time there and close to his 50th. After 25-years in the game Mikey’s done some shit. Most noticeably he started the outerwear brand, 241, built a secret backcountry zone in Tahoe complete with snowcat and off-the-grid hand-built cabin, made his own documentary, pioneered the action self-portrait, did the most ridiculous heli drop-in to date (eat your heart out Travis Rice), and, at 39, still throws down laid-out backies over 40-foot road gaps. Who is Ryan Allan and why should you care? Ryan is one of those photographers that has been there and done that before you even thought of doing it. As a founding editor in Canada’s SBC Skateboard Magazine, I first met Ryan while we were both cutting our teeth inside the magazine publication world. The main difference was that Ryan worked on the skateboard side of things, while I was on snowboard side. Oh ya, and Ryan knew how to use flashes and shoot amazing photos, all while I was just learning the craft. I remember asking him a lot of questions. It’s no secret. I love film. I shoot film all the time. For me it’s a style choice for a lot of my personal work but I still push for it with clients when the time is right. But more and more, when push comes to shove, film gets sand thrown in it’s face in favour of digital. However, I know many other photographers that feel the same way I do and want to use film whenever possible. For some time now, I have wanted to put together a series of interviews about the use of film in our digital world. Bneeth has presented me with the opportunity to get down to the heart of this pressing matter.

I first met Aaron, a.k.a SonReal, through skateboarding back in the early 2000’s. We quickly became good friends. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him build a foundation with his music career and take it all the way to where he’s currently at. Sure, there might have been a few hiccups here and there, but lets just say that they come with the job. As an east coast-influenced artist that grew up in a small town, there’s a learning curve that goes beyond the music. SonReal has built up his confidence and, in turn shaped himself into the musician that he is today. Read more
