After shooting action sports full-time for almost 20 years, I quit. I was successful and had accomplished some amazing things. Most people thought I had a dream job, but I knew that I was done with it. The fire was out and nothing could relight it.

Waiting and anticipating is a thing of the past these days, and people’s patience grows shorter and shorter by the minute. This can be a good thing with the growth of the internet when organizing a certain event. Trying to organize a country to have a video contest would have been very difficult a few years ago, especially when it comes to the mass population viewing the winning entries.

It is 5:45am, my alarm is buzzing for the third consecutive time this morning and finally I get up, throw on an old pair of jeans and my trusty insulated plaid button up. It’s the uniform of choice among my co-workers on the construction site. I have just graduated from BCIT with a journeyman certificate in the trade of plumbing and this is my first week back to work.

Several years ago, when the excitement for motorcycles was still fresh and new to me, my friend rick got back from a skate trip and brought with him two videos; one was a Ruff Ryders music video featuring some booty shaking and motorcycle stunts by Wink 1100 (how many blocks you got?), while the other was The Road Racers.

What can I say? I’m not a two weeks a year type of person. Leaving a comfortable ‘bright lights, big city’ life working for the Swoosh to write for cents on the word in a strange surf filled land didn’t seem like a hard decision.

“The harder I work, the luckier I get.” I can’t remember where I first heard that, but it certainly rings true. Another cliché that I like, “If you love what you do then it isn’t actually work.” I managed to take these two old adages and put them to work for me.

I shoot with my Hasselblad a lot. I talk about it a lot too. Probably ad naseum. But I get asked the same question all the time so what can I say?: “what’s your favourite camera to shoot with??”. I’m not gonna lie and change my answer just because I always say the same thing. They should ask more original questions right??

This is an example of the “tilt shift” feature. I’m sure you have heard by now about the iPhone app called Instagram it has caught on like wildfire over the last few months, it is currently the fastest growing online photo sharing community. Some may say it is addictive, and it is.

Today’s Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras (DSLR) have a flash sync limitation of 200, 250 or 320, depending on the model. For us snowboarding photographers, we’ve been dealing with this rather slow sync speed since the early days of snowboard documentation. There are a few different techniques in squeaking out a higher shutter speed to properly catch fast moving action while using artificial light.

I love that the East Coast decided to dress up like winter for Halloween this year. The first major snowstorm of the season hit the Eastern Seaboard (and the media) last weekend, pummeling some of the oldest cities in the States and leaving millions without power for days. Dubbed, the ridiculously nonsensical “Snowtober” by the talking heads on TV, it’s the Orange Alert to last year’s Red “Snowmageddon.”
