Arto Saari on Alien Workshop and Gravis Footwear

Sunday, May 4 / 2008

Big news on the block surrounding Arto Saari. He is off Flip Skatebaords/Etnies Shoes and onto Alien Workshop/Gravis Shoes. Please tell me everybody out there reading this post know s that Burton bought Alien Workship and Habitat Skateboards a little while ago. Thats right, Burton. If you want to have a big stable company, or a nice stable investment portfolio, one things remains key; you need to diversify. Geoff Rowley left this on the TWS skate site: "Arto is like a brother to me. After years of being on the same team with the same goals it was

Carts of Darkness

Friday, May 2 / 2008

“Originally it was supposed to be a comedy YouTube thing of these guys who rode shopping carts in North Vancouver, and it turned into a feature-length documentary that the National Film Board has picked up,” Murray Siple explained when I interviewed him about Carts of Darkness for a spread in SBC Skateboard's Fall 2007 issue (9.4). I randomly ended up watching the final showing of Murray’s documentary-esque film with Bob K at the Vancouver International Film Centre last night. For those unfamiliar with the project, it showcases the struggles and hill-bombing triumphs of a handful

Carts of Darkness Trailer

Friday, May 2 / 2008

I remember waking up in the middle of the night when I lived in North Vancouver a few years back. It was so weird because I could swear it sounded like a shopping cart and some clanging bottles banging around. Before I was ever able to actually get out of bed and see what the hell was making that noise it was to late. Living on Lonsdale was pretty fun because you could bomb the hill on the way to the Sea Bus (local water transportation from North

Web Presence

Monday, May 5 / 2008

I probably plug these guys in all my posts because I put in work for them, but they’ve launched a new site initiative with a complete redesign as of today. There will be a constant barrage of new content up on there, and some web-rendered classics from the print product to cater to the short attention spans of the nation.

A couple of old interviews I did are in there, including one with Chris Haslam (Issue 8.5, 2006) and one with Spencer Hamilton (Issue 9.1, 2007). Click around and bookmark it for a revisit.

MAGPIE has left the building. Picking up Magnus at Amtrak, only to drop him directly off at the airport for a 20 hour flight to Greece, ALONE. Can you imagine flying to a country halfway around the world solo, praying the people picking you up aren't late or forget about you! I'm sure things will be fine, but GOOD LUCK MAG, LET ME KNOW YOU ARE SAFE!

Cop It...

Wednesday, May 7 / 2008

The new issue of Concrete Skateboarding (#93) is spreading its wings to skateshops across the land, and it’s a good one. Kelly Litzenberger (editor/art director), Brian Caissie (photo editor) and myself put in work, and in case you haven’t seen it just yet, I won’t spoil the cover surprise. My fellow word soldiers, Nick Shinner and Don Dudski, occupy some text-space in the mag, and I had some fun writing captions throughout the issue. As well, putting together this spread on Adam Cassidy’s mini in Vancouver (above) was a blast, since it meant going out and skating
